At least the US authorities are trying to uncover those things and are not afraid to investigate against the church.
A single example from germany: 1996 some priest molested 225 children over a period of 8 years. The prosecutor found proofs that the bishop not only knew about it all the years, he also destroyed proofs and proctected the priest from prosecution.
The priest got 2 years on parole!!! The bishop / church... nothing.
