Your best bet if you find yourself in a predicament like that is to try to work something out outside of the court. Pay by check and keep everything documented because if you do find yourself in front of a judge and you're a male, chances are you're fucked.
I've seen this from both sides.

Before I got married I was in a two year relationship with a single mom. She dated this loser in high school, hooked up for a night right before graduation, and a few months later she discovered she was knocked up. The best part was she didn't tell him and decided to raise the child on her own. She listed his name once on a form when she was going for government support, and suddenly baby daddy discovered he had a five year old kid. I could only imagine how he felt when he found out he had a five year old daughter.

The guy was a complete loser, and he paid $902 in support. (This was a long time ago, twenty years ago.) I remember the amount because he wrote the checks out "Nine hundred tow dollars" every month, and we laughed. $902 was a lot of money back then, about $1700 now. This money was used to pay the mother's rent.

In return he got to see the child for four hours every other week AND had to pay back five years of support for a child he didn't know existed.

It's such a fucked up system.
