"better" and "cheaper" depends on where you stand... UK taxes are at least 10-15% higher than the US....
don't know about you, but I'll take extra 10-15% income that *I* choose to where to spend over getting "free" healthcare/education any day without even thinking twice..
lets say you are a plumber, a pretty ordinary and relatively low-end profession... you would earn about $50k/year... x 15% = $7500 per year extra in taxes your WHOLE life every single year... I don't know how you can keep a straight face and tell anyone that is a good deal...
