It's simple business. People tend to follow crowds. If there's a big buzz about something, people want to know what that buzz is. You can buy fake likes on Facebook and fake twitter followers. Lots of clubs make people stand outside in line waiting to get in even when the club is not filled yet because it looks like it must be THE hot spot. Donald Trump paid people to appear at his first rally to make it look like he had lots of supporters. You can buy fake reviews for your website, service or product. "Lots of people" = "Lots of people".
