The vast majority of humans are followers and if a message or messages are repeated over and and over then most of the people just blindly believe it. Adding to the problem are all the modern technologies like TV and internet so these messages are beamed at a greater frequency and can be normalized over a large population. And of course we live in a consumer culture with tons of distractions like movies, sports, etc.
The average modern person is in complete denial and only cares about their own comfort. They do not want to hear the truth and are attracted to candidates who make them feel that everything is going to be ok.
It has been said that a small dedicated group of people can change the world and that is certainly what has happened. If you have a crowd of 10,000 people I promise you that a smaller group of 50 people could just begin to completely control the crowd if they at as a united front.
