they are simply confused... no big deal. But I can see why... I split from my ex-wife in early '97 and moved out of state. We filed a joint return for '97 and I filed a part-year resident state... for '97. Filed a complete full year resident return in a different state for '98 though. I worked for a company in yet another state, paid by one of their branches in yet another state, and had my taxes done by a CPA in the original state making the claim.
What mystifies me though, is why the fuck a state tax revenue office can't simply plug my SSN into their computers and pull all this up in the first place.
Incompetence costs us all.
