Their current camp, Alexandria, was set up as an independent, solar energy sufficient subdivision. The grid is still working. I think they did a good job story telling the guns, power, ammunition and food (mostly obtained through painful scrounging). Food and ammunition are really low right now, hence the deal with Hilltop and scouting the metal foundry for reloading.
I do think the action sequences are hokey. Zombies with egg shell skulls somehow possess fantastical jaw power. Remember the Governor's science dude who wore a chain-mail suit they couldn't bite through? They should all be going out with that shit, not bare armed! I'm getting tired of the live vs live factions stuff, too.
