A shield wouldn't be necessary since the zombies move like 90 year old men with a severe case of arthritis. Now if they moved like they did in World War Z, then yes, shields would be necessary, along with great running shoes.

With over 95 - 98% of the world population gone, food would be in abundance. All the canned foods with the same shelf life as depleted uranium, and other goods they can grow on their own. I think food would be the least of their concerns unless they run out in their immediate area. They should be holed up near a major metropolitan area rather than out in the styx. In order to have hope, you would have to live your life as if things were eventually going to go back to "normal". That's coping 101.

They have gas (to run generators). They have a vast supply of water. And they have fire. Put them all together and you have hot water. But I agree on all the cheesy love scenes. Is that supposed to make us care more about the characters? I liked Michonne better when she was the bad ass black Samurai, and not sucking Rick's cock while trying to play Suzy Homemaker.

Quite the opposite. With the majority of the population wiped out, fuel, ammo, and food would be abundant. It's not like gasoline rots after a couple months.
There have been countless scenes where a shield would have made a better tool than an arm or hand to hold off Zombies. A shield holds them back giving a second more to deliver the killing blow. Also, as a group, they form a wall and stab freely. They also have a very bad habit of going off solo or breaking away from a group. Ending up in trouble.

The last few episodes have been all out getting enough food. Yes, there are billions of bullets in the US. They can only access the area they're in which also applies to food and fuel.

How do they collect water? There are no pumping stations to pump it through the pipes we all rely on. It won't get to the settlement unless it's from a river or rain have you seen either?

Also, too many fat people in the settlement they would soon be getting very slim.

Canned food last forever. Nothing else does. So no dairy products, sugar, flour, fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, etc. Look at what's canned in the supermarket next time you go. It could be far better with better writers doing a little bit of thinking.
