I think they have a micro budget for this show, and they saved a ton of money by keeping the story mainly on the beach and in a boat. It has to be dirt cheap for those locations. No city shooting, etc.
It's a very different show than TWD, but it's missing something. The characters don't bother me too much, but they don't exactly pop off the screen for me.
