Google is much powerful enough to ignore all the links you buy or trade because it doesn't trust them. The most important thing Google trust is... Google itself. When seeps everywhere (Google Search Engine, Google toolbars, Google Analytics, Android, Chrome etc), it can estimate the weight of your site w/o any backlinks which can be easily faked. Now Google uses the UA factors (bounce rate, time on site, page view depth, number of bookmarkes and many more). So if your site is a piece of shit, which has a million of paid backlinks, they won't help it to get a good position in SERP's. Likely it will be banned. On the other hand, if your site is made for humans and it's really interesting to them, it will jump t the top of SERP's w/o a single backlink to it.
