Lack of availability probably led to his death.
He may have had a lot of trouble getting enough. For instance, the stories of him pacing around agitated in a Walgreens parking lot for 4 days prior to his death.
I'm theorizing that he wasn't getting enough pills to satisfy what his body had become accustomed to. Effectively detoxing without wanting to and lowering his resistance level.
And then he gets his hands on a new supply and takes the same amount he was used to taking on a daily basis and it killed him.
I read Keith Richards book "Life" and in it he talks about the friends he lost to overdoses over the years.
And he said that was always the case. They would get "clean" for a couple of months and then decide to use again. And they would use the same amounts they had been using in the past...and it turned out to be a lethal dose.
