Yes, you are missing that an
external drive is not the same as an
internal drive. If you can't reach it and have to open the machine up then it's an internal drive. External plugs in via a USB cable.
Chances are you will have to bring the machine in, have someone open it, remove the hard drive, and see if it can be recovered. Or you can try opening the machine yourself, unscrewing the drive and sending it to a data recovery company. Here in New York it would cost around $80 to see if it could be recovered or if it has to be sent to a lab. In that case, it would cost....who knows. LOL
