Supporting a person and "promising them the nomination" are two different things. If I tell you I'll support you if you run for office, that is "support". If I tell you I'll give you the office, I'm either a criminal or delusional.

Clinton has a lot of support, and so did Bush. If the voters mirror that support, she wins. If not, she loses. There is no person with the power to give the nomination or the presidency.
