The only think propping up Saudi Arabia was it's oil. Now that the United States can produce more oil than we need, we need to buy a lot less oil from others. Saudi Arabia is screwed, and at the very same time their importance has been minimized.
Wait until China starts producing more oil than the United States, which will most likely happen in the next ten years. At a certain point in time no one will be exporting oil. And while that doesn't sound like a big deal, it is - The entire military strategy since before WWII has been based on oil and who produces it. The only reason the Middle East has any importance at all is because of their oil; They put the screws to us during the OPEC crisis in the 1970s.
