What are you talking about? Ubuntu is an operating system, while iMac is just a PC brand (one of many like Asus, Lenovo etc).

If you are going to compare Ubuntu with Mac OS X (which is not iMac PC), when course Ubuntu will be more useful, because it's an open-source Linux system.

In Ubuntu you can have it vertical, horizontal or no taskbar at all. You can use various window managers which can be configured in the exact way you want it.
