He was doing a neighborhood watch, saw Martin and called the police because he thought Martin was acting suspiciously. The 911 dispatcher told him not to pursue Martin and to wait in his car for the police. He chose not to listen and went after him. At some point the fight happened. Zimmerman said Martin was hiding, waiting for him and attacked him. Since his is the only word we have we can't know if that is true or now.

What we do is know is that had he just waited in his car none of this would have happened.
