This is like a candidate here all of a sudden starts speaking arabic, because in some neighborhoods in the Netherlands it's the native language of the majority of the people there. Yet it is preposterous, because when you are an immigrant you have to learn the language in the country you live in, not the other way around.
And the puerto rico comment sounds like a great argument, but we all know she does it to get the vote of the hispanics in California.

No, you don't get it. The official language of the United States has nothing to do with it. The majority of the people in California are now Hispanic and speak Spanish. The issue shouldn't be "Why is she speaking Spanish to Americans?" but instead "Why is she speaking English in California?".
I live in Northern California, just north of Sacramento. I have no idea what percentage of people here are Hispanic, but there are some areas in town where no one speaks English. And I live in a very small town. (The best part is it's become obvious we have Mexican restaurants for Hispanics, and then Mexican restaurants for us white folks.
