It's not hard to kill an animal at point blank range when they're coming right at you. I've had animals literally bite the barrel of my gun. It's not like I'd stand back 30 feet and take aim at a black mass. Walk right up and place the barrel in their face, execution style. Have you ever killed something with buckshot? It's not hard. Besides, kill one of them and good chance the others will scatter. Dogs don't like loud explosive noises.
