Motel = Motor Hotel, i.e. You drive up to your room. Usually cheaper, easier to get hookers, cadavers and other stuff in and out of your room while avoiding front desk scrutiny and prying eyes.
If I am not mistaken it is a marketing term coined in the glory days of route 66 and intended to offer a convenient place to sleep for motorists who just wanted to grab a few z's before hitting the road again.
