To my knowledge Jdoughs didn't consider Adult Link Exchange as real competition since it never got busy and Drocd never took any design inspiration from it. It is not as active as it once was, but is still used by 100's of webmasters each month.

Linkspun never got anybody's sites banned by Google. Linkspun is a tool. If you miss used the tool and got your sites banned that is your own issue. I have over 600 trades there and my partners are a select group of webmasters who don't give out links like candy. Trade correctly and you will have no issues. Trade incorrectly and you will get filtered in search results real quick.
