Not a good place for his campaign to be considering the general election hasn't even technically started.

The problem is Trump has never run a campaign before. On the other hand, Hillary is a veteran at this and has been running campaigns for the past thirty / forty years including governor of Arkansas, Bill's two presidential runs, and then her campaign for the Senate.
It's stunning that Trump has gotten this far, but let's face it - the only reason he has gotten this far is because he financed most of his campaign. Trump has invested maybe ten million dollars but.... Mitt Romney raised $993 million dollars for his campaign, while Trump has only raised $1.3 million last month. At the same time, Trump doesn't have the staffers on the ground.
