I went to see The Shallows the other night. (It was either this or Independence Day. I'm glad I picked The Shallows).
Don't listen to the haters - this movie is really good. It's not at all what I expected either. It's low budget ($17 Million) yet beautifully shot, with a well written SMART story, and really good direction.
It's short at about 90 minutes or so.
I completely missed all of the visual effects in the movie, meaning those vfx shots are perfect. Super well done.
It's tense, a little scary, with a single, very well executed JUMP scare that's not a ripoff like is done in typical scary movies.
Blake Lively is a pretty good actress now and she'll probably be the queen of Hollywood in a few years as her skills improve. And wow is she good looking. She's sexy, but doesn't use it. The director clearly, clearly loves her ass because her ass is right there in your lucky, lucky face constantly for at least the first 30 minutes of the movie.
People are comparing this to Jaws which is probably not fair, but it IS a good scary Shark movie, so why not. Like Jaws though, they don't really show you the shark. Most of the time it's hidden. You don't see it, but you know its there, and it works.
The Shallows: A very well made and unexpected summer movie treat.
