Actually it's the reverse which is their problem.. States fund their budgets with gas taxes. As higher mpg cars become the norm, they get less road tax revenue. Electric cars pay zero road tax yet use the roads..
Older less efficient cars pay more already due to the lower mpg meaning g they pay more road tax because they buy more fuel at the pump.
This is why some states even randomly check diesel fuel on the road side to try to catch people using marine diesel or veggie oil..both have no road tax..
