My fiancee and I have a pretty simple system for normal living expenses - she pays one week, I pay the next. There was a time when I was flat broke and she had money, now I make more than her so I can return the favour. We're a couple so even though we still have separate bank accounts we are effectively pooling our money, it doesn't seem unusual to me to be sharing expenses. The only thing we don't split equally is the home loan.
