I think we're in the psychological deceive/disinformation arena on American sociology with Putin right now. He threw a got after his failure at the Sochi Olympics but he's over it and wants back in with the U.S. and is using his relations with Trump and the above methods to a achieve that.

As far as I know, Putin considers Sochi Olympics as a success, but not as a failure, barbecue Russia has got most of the medals there. As about the propaganda, so it hasn't changed while last 100 years and works the same way anywhere, including the USA for example.
