While this movie is full of melodrama and contains some cheesy vfx, the nuclear war scene is still scary as fuck to me. I've seen movies featuring other nukes and destruction of cities but the scene in The Day After always stands out. Any idea how and why? The VFX are bad (even by 1980's standards), so why does it work? Editing? Sound perhaps? Chills...

I don't know either. I've seen this movie on TV in early 80's when I was a kid. I don't remember the plot, but I still remember some scenes that have impressed me, such as the EMI effect and the ending scenes of the movie, which were so non-Hollywood ones. They were very typical for Russian cinematography.
