similar to this, but even less strain on the joints is swimming with many lengths, swimming as the length as fast as you can...

The breast stroke is great for pecs & over arm forward stroke for speed, but doggy paddle is the similar movement to cross training on the elliptical, using more of your body & much more effort. Try it next time you're swimming
