Laptop only, hdmi to a 24" screen.
I took my old desktop and attached it to my living room screen so I can watch shows & movies on the internet on the large screen tv.
I just rendered a 4 hour 1080p video on a laptop, it took a few hours but it was fine. Didn't overheat and video looks great.
You can get a great laptop with 6gb memory, 1TBHD these days for $350 and hdmi to a larger screen.
