I've lived in Queenstown and Nelson and they are basically a weekly event anything under a 5 and I'd sleep thru it.
For all those that wont live in certain areas or states because of Quakes, I can tell you from New Zealand people moved to Christchurch from Wellington because Christchurch was seen as a Quake safe city, 185 people died in 2011 with a 6.3 quake.
