Now that I've had a ipad and now a samsung 10.5" tablet I don't need my laptop to go on overnight trips.
I have a sleek and quiet Dell 15" laptop that I hook up to a 23" lcd via hdmi. I also use a wired usb keyboard and wireless mouse. It's a i7 processor so it's powerful enough to replace a desktop but the 15" is still portable

This is what I'm currently doing. But i travel a lot. Hence, 17" macbook pro ( sadly not an option anymore ) or 15" retina one ( fairly expensive solution and yet i'm not 100% sure if i want to work doing a lot of zooming due to physical object size ).
Since most of the work, when i travel, is done in a hotel / apartment, not on the go, i tend to think a 21.15 slick monitor and a powered up macbook air should do.
