I don't think you understand. The TRS-80 lacked network capabilities, and even lacked a hard disk. They had a floppy controller, but not a hard disk controller.
The device its connected to is a controller board that expands its disk capabilities, and ads an RGP port, and an Ethernet port.
The programs that use it such as Telnet and FTP, all run on the computer itself, not on the board. They load from the disk into the computer's Ram, and run from there.
