Well if he was dead, the establishment definitely wouldn't want that to come out before the selection (selection rather than election, of course) because it could switch people away from voting for Hillary.
Likewise, if they were going to take him out, they'd choose to do so just before the selection so that he would be unable to release any last minute bombshells that could harm Hillary's chances.
So, whilst I'm sure he's (most likely) still alive, I guess its still a reasonable proposition that he got assassinated unless proof shows otherwise.
