The guy with the baseball bat is the leader of one group (group A). He captured the other group (group b) which is led by the guy on his knees in the middle. Previously (last season) the captured group b had raided one of the other group's A outposts and killed lots of people assuming they were eliminating a known threat that was preying on a third group (c) of friendlies.

It turns out the group A was much bigger than they realized and wasn't just those in the out post they raided. Rather than 15 or so people it's likely over a 100. Due to group B killing some of the group A member the leader wanted to teach them a lesson and kill a member(s) of group B then pimp group B out for resources..

The base ball bat is what he used for the killing.. Group B is the group the series is about you you are supposed to be attached to them more so than group's A or C.
