With AI, automation, and robotics there will likely be a time when there simply are not enough jobs for all the people that want them. This likely won't happen very soon, but I can see a time in the not too far off future where this could happen. At that point we have to start wondering what to do with all the people who can't get jobs. A universal income could work. It could lower crime and reduce welfare which could help pay for it, but I don't know how well it would work in the long term.
We have a brave new world just on the horizon.
