It wasn't necessarily because they wanted to piss off the people they don't like, but more so because they were pissed off at the system and incompetence of the federal government. I agree with you that many of Trump's voters probably aren't too confident that Trump is adequately qualified, but they simply want someone to shake up the way things have been going and they see Trump as the loose cannon that could do that.

Watch this focus group that took place just before the election and you'll get an idea of just how pissed off each party was with the choice of candidates.
