Retired, students, and disabled (etc) are included in the total population. They are not included in the labor force because they are not working.

They aren't included in the LABOR FORCE which is what they divide the total population by... Damn do I really have to teach you something so elementary? If you want to talk common sense.. Common sense would tell you those that have already participated or can't participate shouldn't be included in participation rate.
