When a family moves for a job, the entire family moves. It might be difficult for the kid to move to a new school in the middle of the school year, but kids do this all the time. He will have to move eventually so why not just do it now?

When I went to work for Playboy they moved me from Phoenix to Sacramento. I moved first and lived here on my own for three months while I searched for a house and then went through the process of buying one. It was horrible. I was without my wife and didn't get to see my kid for weeks at a time. We tried to make trips on weekends (and a Phoenix Forum) but it was just horrible.

Not sure why anyone would want to go through this for six months.
