I was always critical of the trend to compete at giving away free content. The only limit was the cost of B/W. Back in the day, there were many stories of affiliates posting TGPs on sites and losing money or breaking even because of the cost of B/W. On sites, some producers could afford to buy spots.
B/W drops to a level Tubes could profit and the rush to give them free content turned into a stampede. And 1-200 views to a sale turned in 1-40,000.
Numbers are an example. Even at a 0.5% conversion, rate the loss of money was unsustainable for most. The industry was only propped up by the increase of surfers from countries we could bill.
