and in hindsight it all seems obvious, but like you said no one wanted it to stop, everyone (not just banks) was making $$ hand over fist, and so everyone wanted the good times to last a bit longer, no one wanted it to end...

So basically what you just said is if they did anything about it it would be political suicide or.... They can take the entire country and the world economy down with them.
No one wanted to it stop. No one. Not the public, not the government, and surely not the banks. No one wanted it to end. But we all knew it was going to end eventually.
