That's right, think about it for a second: We never see Amy Schumer wear red lipstick?or any loud lip color, for that matter. A quick scan back through her red-carpet appearances confirmed that she almost always goes with shiny nude lipstick shades, opting instead to play up her eyes. But for an event in New York City last night, she ventured outside her makeup comfort zone and wear a particularly vivid shade of red. "Trying something new," makeup artist Andrea Tiller noted in a shot she posted of the look she created on Schumer to match the comedian's slinky bright-red Calvin Klein dress. The lip color she used: Laura Mercier True Red Lip Pencil, topped with Dior Creme De Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm.
What we love most about this is that, in true Schumer fashion, it gives the middle finger to one outdated "rule" of makeup: that women with small mouths and/or thin lips shouldn't wear bold lipstick. It's true that more natural lip shades, notably those with a glossy finish, give the illusion of plumping the lips up, while bright colors like this tend to visually shrink them, but who's to say the goal should always be to make lips look bigger? Sometimes a girl just wants to have a big-color moment, and the small-lipped among us are no exception. We love how this fun color and different makeup approach shifts the focus to Schumer's pretty-though-petite lips, while adding playful brightness to her entire face. May this photo give courage to shy lipstick wearers everywhere?toss out any "rules" you've taken to heart over the years and wear whatever shade strikes your fancy. As long as you're loving it, you'll look smashing.
