Usually when someone's response to allegations is; that's ridiculous or it's a ludicrous allegation -- that is a cover up statement in an attempt to to belittle your adversary and to impute a demented allegation.
Distract attention from the issue as if it cannot or never happened. Poor choice of words -- this is an old lawyer's slight of hand courtroom trick.
