You are playing semantics. There was a time when reporting was about reporting verifiable facts by people who held themselves to high standards, published by an entity which held itself to high standards... not just reporting made up drama because someone said something on record. There was also a time when the only people that would report randoms shit someone said as "news" was The National Enquirer.
As Denzel Washington said the other day "if you don't read the news, you're uninformed, if you do read the news, you're misinformed". That is where this country is now in terms of news and reporting and where a 24hr news cycle has taken things.
