We may need the Chinese to better control the North Korean nut case -- that is in our mutual interest. Taiwan and the PRC tolerate each other -- if the Chinese wanted to take Taiwan they could -- same as Putin took Crimea.
If the Chinese invaded Taiwan do you advocate starting a shooting war with China? We wouldn't and they know it -- it would fuck up the business relationship that has brought prosperity to China. The Chinese lack the will to invade Taiwan for the same reasons. More to lose than to gain.
I am not advocating a Neville Chamberlain Munich Agreement but we have to step back and think.
Only a fool picks a fight he cannot win or recover from.
Taiwan could become a semi-autonomous Chinese State like Hong Kong and we all move on. Taiwan is not a bargaining chip in an international trade game

I see it more as trade routes through the South China sea and them having major new influence and control over the Philippines, Vietnam & Malaysia with their new, now militarized, man-made islands.
This is part of the reason Duerte has become so emboldened, the Chinese are his new big time lender and he now wants our bases closed.
