US politicians have never ignored the Rust Belt. They created it.
If the people who choose who you elect did underestimate the hate Americans have for the past run of Presidents. Then they're clearly not very bright. It was becoming clear that Trump was crushing any other Republican and failing to allow Clinton to address the issues that count.
