When I travel I sometimes take temp jobs. I usually do warehouse or shipping and receiving type jobs, because it's easy to get them and the pay is usually ok.
I dunno why but I like to drive heavy equipment and for what ever reason I like to drive reach trucks the most. It's kinda fun tbh.
I've worked in large distrubtion centers all over the country and it's actually kind of cool to see how fast stuff moves in and out of these places. Sort of amazing the entire logistics that is out there which most people are oblivious to.
With that said, in most busy hub cities I can have a job with-in 2 to 3 days making typically $15-18/hr as a temp. Often I'll get 3x12 hr shifts which is common in the industry giving you 4 days off. This is pretty awesome for someone like me which is why I often do it.
Long story short, out of every place I've ever worked Amazon's distrubtion center is the 2nd to the lowest pay I've ever made in that industry. The lowest pay I've ever made was for a gas pump company called Wayne. They were in Texas and the Amazon DC was in FL.
I do believe the states do have a lot to play in those wages. In FL or Texas, a job for say Staples distrubtion center will max out at say $15/hr but the same compamy, same job will pay $18 in CT or CO.
Edit.. I wanted to say the working conditions were not any worse at Amazon it was just lowER than standard pay.
