McDonalds starts higher than minimum wage. The issue with Amazon, is they have made their logistics operation a very public part of their company. Due to this jobs at their warehouses are more open to the general public, so you get lots of people taking these jobs whom shouldn't be in a warehouse environment or wouldn't normally get those kinds of jobs.
Due to this, they pay lower because they can get away with it being their employee are sheltered from really knowing much about other industry jobs in the same field and what they pay. Amazon is the type of place you work if you have zero experience or it's the only option..
Literally any other major company is better.. Back when I worked for a Staples DC, I was making $18/hr worked 3 days a week (3x12hrs) I had 5 weeks of paid time off every year and health insurance. Anything over 36hrs was over time and they were always giving us little bonuses for making rate or getting us catered food. I ran another business and still had time to do what I wanted.
Granted most places aren't like that but it wasn't as uncommon as you might think. No one that has any experience should stay at Amazon if they have a choice.. It's literally set up to be a high turn over temp workforce.
