They call it "Tapas", because it means "toppers". Many years back, in Madrid, the bars would put a piece of bread on top of your glass to stop the flies going in your drink. Then they followed to put a piece of salami or Iberico ham on the bread, then onwards, small dishes were created, albondigas (meat balls), tortilla (Spanish omelette), Chicken liver & onion, beef & peas, many others, fish dishes & octopus. They're just small dishes for 1 or 2 euro each, you have 5 or 6 to share between a few people, a bit of each.
I've never seen Mac & cheese on the order, but sounds funny to have seen his face when they served up such a small portion for him, the poor bugger
