We hand out firearms to anyone who wants them.
The case with the shooter at the airport in Florida is a great example. He was clearly mentally ill, turned himself into the FBI, was sent to a mental hospital, and they gave him his firearm back. The problem here is there is a difficult balance between protecting someone's right to own a firearm vs having them declared mentally ill.
I have a friend of mine who is borderline mentally ill. He has been on disability for the past twenty years. He is fifty years old, has the capacity of a sixteen year old, and barely manages to function as an adult. He has an M16 assault rifle.
