It always better to keep them separated: the plugin which grabs the content and the theme which displays it. This simple solution gives you a freedom and flexibility. So you can always use a few different plugins at the same time to generate the content and also you can always switch your WP theme to some new and better-looking one w/o losing any functionality of your site.
So if a plugin is tied to some particular theme or if some particular theme promises you the content curation feature, that's a very bad solution - keep away from it.
