(That's still a work in progress and should not be considered a sustitute for studying the actual claims made within the patent(s) yourself)

Now if, for instance, you found a good, published description of how to encode a video or music file and upload it to a BBS to share with others, it might be a very good find.

The best place may be on very old archives of the newsgroups... some of the tech newsgroups back then were open source sharing and very detailed.
